How to get Brat Summer hair

Brat summer is officially in full swing and going nowhere. Whatever the behaviour, whatever the song, one thing’s for certain: slime lime green might as well be the Pantone color of the season. Ever since that green wall in Brooklyn popped up in May alongside a surprise set from Charli XCX, the exact shade of her sixth album has been recreated all over online and in real life.

We’re seeing brat green My Little Ponies, graphic swirly eyeliner, gelly-green acrylic nails and entire bedrooms painted the punchy unforgettable shade. But now more than ever, we’re holding this exact hue of green so close to our hearts (especially any 90s babies or older), as there was a fond and distant time when brat green was everywhere for years on end. The utmost color of playful rebellion, the call to fully turn heads or add touches of it to your life – the energy of brat green hasn’t lost itself over the decades, even now in its tongue-in-cheek return. Want it on your head? We break down how to get perfect brat hair color in a few simple steps.

What is brat hair?

Brat hair simply does not care. Think SZA’s slime moment from 2018, with a strong shot of Billie’s acid green parting in lockdown – marinated in a “the world might be ending, but live it up” outlook. It’s almost bioluminescent (yes, glow in the dark), Grinch-y and actually suits everyone.

Whether it’s streaks of brat green, a money piece, or a full-on all-over fluoro moment, the choice is yours. Just make sure you’re starting with as light as base as possible; for a shade so bright (and pretty light on the spectrum of greens), it’s a must to have cream to near-white hair underneath.

How to mix colors for the perfect brat color:

  • Start with a bleached blonde base for the truest green result.

  • Decide on your perfect brat green - our Super Cool Colour in Slime Light is a great base to start with. Add some Twisted Lemon for more of an electric yellow tinge, or Green Juice for a deeper green.

  • Let it sit for the maximum time possible – 30 minutes – to get the most vivid result.

  • Rinse with cool water to keep the color locked in, then towel dry and style. Brat Summer is 100% loaded.

How to make the Brat Green hair color last longer:

Washing makes vivid colors fade the fastest. Using gentler shampoos that are color-safe is key - like our Reincarnation Shampoo, which stops so much of your color going down the drain. Keep the focus on the roots rather than the lengths, and rinse with lukewarm water. Use our Reincarnation Conditioner and Mask frequently to keep color shiny and luminous, and always use heat and UV protectant when using heat tools or being out in the sun.
