How to dip-dye your hair at home

Tips from the Bleach experts on dip-dyeing your own hair pastel purple

What you’ll need:

How to prepare:

STEP 1: BLEACH

First, lighten your hair using Total Bleach. Start with the mid-lengths and ends, leaving your roots to last – heat from your scalp makes the first 2 cm or about ¾ of an inch of hair develop more quickly, so you need to give the rest a head start.

  1. Divide your hair into four quarter sections and secure.

  2. Use a tint brush to section out thin slices of hair and apply your bleach mixture liberally.

  3. Gently massage it in as you go to make sure every hair is coated in bleach.

  4. Work through your whole head. Slice. Bleach. Massage. Repeat!

  5. Let the bleach develop for 20-40 minutes, or until the hair has lightened enough.

  6. Then do your roots with the same slicing technique. Set a timer for 30-45 minutes.

  7. Check the hair every 10 minutes by gently scraping the bleach away from your roots with the edge of your tint brush to check the color and condition of your hair.

  8. Once you’re done, rinse until the water runs clear then shampoo twice and gently towel dry. Now it’s time to tone!

Step 2: TONER

Champagne Super Toner neutralises brassy bleach yellows and balances out your blonde for a nice creamy blonde base.

  1. Centre-part your towel-dried hair and apply the toner mixture to the warmest/yellowest bits of your bleached hair first, then do the rest.

  2. Remember to saturate and smoosh!

  3. Let your hair develop for 10-20 minutes, then rinse with cool water and condition with Reincarnation Mask for added nourishment.

Step 3: DIP-DYE THE TIPS

Lavender Grey Toner creates a silvery lilac finish over bleached and blonde hair.

  1. Section your hair into quarters so you have two front sections and two back sections.

  2. Start at the back. Paint on Lavender Grey Toner about 8 cm or 3 inches from the ends of your hair.

  3. With your middle and index finger, smoosh the color half way up the hair. This ensures a smooth transition between your blonde and lavender.

  4. Wipe your gloves free of product and repeat on the next section.

  5. Check that the color is even on both sides of your head, applying extra where needed for the most even results.

  6. Leave to develop for 30 mins, then rinse, shampoo, and style!
