How to protect your bleached & dyed hair on vacation

Soaking up some sun? Here’s how to keep your bleach blonde or colored hair safe

You’ve spent tons of time bleaching and dyeing your own hair at home (or forking out for a professional job). So don’t let it all go to waste as soon as summer comes around!

Sun, salt and chlorine might be some of your favourite things about going on vacation, but they’re not your hair’s! Bleached and dyed hair is a bit more porous than virgin hair, which means keeping it healthy and keeping your color vibrant while out and about in the hot months will take a little extra care. Holidays can fade your toner or dye and dry out your hair, but with these tips from our salon experts, protecting it is easy!

Here’s how to take care of bleached hair before, during and after the summer vacation.

Strengthening your bleached hair before you go on holiday

  1. Before your trip, think about how your current color will fade. Try topping up your shade, taking it a bit deeper or cooler than normal, so that when it fades you’re closer to your usual color.

  2. Get your hair in good health leading up to your holiday.

    1. Trim off split ends to prevent them from getting worse in the sun

    2. Use a conditioning protein treatment like our Reincarnation Mask

    3. Reduce heat styling to preserve as much of your natural oils as possible

Protecting bleached hair while on vacation

  1. Cover hair with a vegan silk hair wrap or sun hat while outside.

  2. Wet your hair with cool water before getting in the ocean or pool. This fills the cuticle with water and means less salt or chlorinated water can get in there to stress out your hair!

  3. Shield your strands by slathering on Reincarnation Mask. The restorative treatment forms a barrier between the hair and the elements. Its bond-building properties help reverse the damage that UV rays can do (drying out hair, breaking down its proteins, etc.).

  4. For a little extra UV protection, you can always use a hair SPF before your layer of Reincarnation Mask.

  5. You’ll probably be sun-kissed and sleepy after a long day poolside or on the beach, but take 10 minutes to top up your tone before settling in for the night!

  6. If you’re a blonde, leave on our Silver Shampoo for 10 minutes for an on-the-go toning solution. The pigments in this purple shampoo banish unwanted yellows and give you a quick dose of ashiness.

  7. For any other colored hair, breathe some life back into your faded shade by mixing your Super Cool Colour with conditioner or Reincarnation Mask and leave that on for 10 minutes!

  8. Gone a bit chlorine green? (Even non-blonde colors can fade a little green!) Wash your hair as soon as you can. Still showing? Use our Rosé or Awkward Peach Shampoos. The pinky undertones in these colored shampoos will help cancel out the green hues.

  9. Always use Reincarnation Mask after shampooing to load your hair up with the moisture it lost from being in the water and sun. Just use it in place of your conditioner while you’re away!

Nourishing bleached hair after your summer holiday

  1. Once you’re home, take the time to give your hair a little TLC!

  2. Use a toner to even out your colour and neutralise any brassy yellows that snuck back in over the holidays.

    1. Use White Toner if you’re an icy or ashy blonde. This is also a good choice if you like cool-toned colours such as Rosé or Blue Weekend.

    2. Use Champagne Super Toner if you’re a creamy or golden blonde, or if your hair is a warm colour such as Awkward Peach.

    3. Pearlescent Toner works well as a base for any pink colours if you’d like a pearlier base than our icy White Toner, or of course if you’ve got pearly blonde hair!

    4. Use Copper Toner for copper and orange hair.

  3. Keep up with all our other tips for caring for bleached hair at all times of the year so your hair’s healthy and raring to go for next summer!
