These are the five hairy tools that make DIY dyeing at home easy

We've rounded up the professional standard tools you need to bleach, tone, colour and style your hair at home

A good dye job is is only as good as the tools you use, so we've put together a roundup of the DIY dyeing aids that'll help you mix and master new looks from root to tip.

Whether you’re starting fresh, topping up regrowth, or maintaining colour, our kit of professional-standard tools will help you bleach, dye and style like a pro. Here’s the lowdown on the root to tip tools that make home bleaching as easy as dye!

Bleach Proof Towel

Goodbye stained t-shirts and discoloured towels! Our brand new Bleach Proof Towel is kryptonite to one of the most annoying at-home bleaching woes: stains! Inspired by the spike in DIY dyeing during months of lockdown, this specially treated, stain resistant towel will help keep your threads looking guest-appropriate, and your fave old tees pristine. It's also big, thick, and made from 100% organic cotton to give you max protection.

Wipe your hands and tools on it, use it to catch drips and spills, scrunch or dry just-bleached hair and keep it around for extra protection. Trust us when we say no one else will know what your Bleach Proof Towel has been through. Mind blowing.

Eco-conut + Brush

You know all that mixing and applying you gotta do with your bleach, toner and colour? We've got something for you! Bleach's very own Eco-conut bowl and tint brush – a reusable coconut bowl and plastic tint brush set for every time you dye your hair.

Made from reclaimed coconut shells that've been specially treated so you can mix bleach and dye in them over and over, the Eco-coconut bowl was first introduced in 2019 to replace the single-use plastic bowls included in our old Bleach and Toner box kit and has become a staple for all Bleachers. Since plastic is… you know... plastic, and metal is a bad choice for mixing colouring products, this super-cute kit keeps the environment *and you* in mind.

Hot-tip: stay away from metallic bowls when mixing bleach! Metal can cause a reaction that speeds up its development. We want you to get the most of your bleach (and not have it develop in the bowl!) so this one’s a win-win, especially if you don't love the idea of mixing up bleach in your cereal bowls!

Crocodile Clips

Get a grip on these guys! Our super-strong Crocodile Clips are perfect for bleaching without the slips. When colouring your hair requires a lot of sectioning and securing, it’s easy to get tangled up with loads of ties and strands coming loose while you’re dyeing. That makes putting the product on tricky! To keep your application even, avoid patches and ensure your whole head gets covered, you’ll want clips like these that hold tight and keep your vision clear.

Available in sets of four, our clips earned their name from the tough grip, double-hinged mechanism and serrated teeth that would give any reptilian beast's jaw clamp a run for its money. Use these hairdresser-approved clips for all hair types and textures whenever you bleach, tone, colour or style. Hold on tight!

Tail Comb

Being fine ain’t a problem when you’ve got our tail comb to hand! Our super-tapered tail comb is crafted to help you create poker straight lines, immaculate sections, eye-wateringly sharp partings and super thin slices – all very helpful when you need to apply product evenly and avoid unsightly patches.

From its slim, tapered end, to its ultra-fine teeth, this is a tool you’ll want on hand all the time. Plus it’s made from up-cycled wheat straw plastic! Use our tail comb whenever you’re bleaching, toning, colouring and styling.

You can also pick it up as part of our Trim Kit pair, which features our dreamy hairdressing scissors below too!

Scissors

When you’re faced with split ends or overgrown fringes, trimming them yourself will require a steady hand, a separate pair of eyes and, most importantly, a good pair of proper scissors. These super sharp, stainless steel hairdressing shears are an absolute must for any DIY bleacher who wants to stay on top of their trims between salon visits.

Our stylists recommend trimming split and dry ends every six to eight weeks, this is especially important if you're bleaching regularly because split ends make friends! Snip those dry tips off to keep your hair looking healthy and help maintain its length! You can check out our DIY guides to trimming and curl dusting at home here.

And before you reach for the kitchen scissors – everyday shears are usually not sharp enough to cut hair and often have serrated edges (not always visible to the naked eye). Those dull blades and rough edges will cause way more harm than good as they'll chew through your hair and leave frayed ends and more splits. Scary!

So, if you’re going to try your hand at trimming, or straight up cutting if you’re brave enough) invest in these cute, photo-worthy clippers.
