Dye your hair bright orange at home

Tips from the Bleach experts on dyeing your own locs orange

What you’ll need:

How to prepare:

STEP 1: BLEACH

First, lighten your hair using our Total Bleach Kit. Start with the mid-lengths and ends – heat from your scalp makes the first 2 cm or ¾ of an inch of hair develop more quickly, so you need to give the rest a head start.

  1. Section the hair into 4 quarter sections.

  2. Starting at the first section, paint each loc from where it starts using plenty of product, and squish the product into the loc.

  3. Once all the locs are covered, move on to the roots. Make sure you lift each loc so that all the hair is covered.

  4. Leave to develop for 40 min. Make sure you check the condition on the hair by doing a scrape test every 10 min.

  5. Rinse really well, shampoo and rinse again.

  6. Towel dry by squeezing as much moisture out of the hair as possible.

STEP 2: TONE

Use our Champagne Super Toner Kit to neutralise brassy bleach yellows and balances out your blonde for a champagne blonde base. You may not need the tone section as the colour will cover a raw bleach, but a toner’s always great for evening things out!

  1. Apply to the most yellow part of the hair first.

  2. Apply to the root by massaging the toner in between each loc.

  3. Paint the toner down the loc, making sure to saturate fully.

  4. Leave to develop for 20 minutes, and then rinse with cool water and condition with Reincarnation Mask for added nourishment.

STEP 3: COLOUR

Our Tangerine Dream Super Cool Colour turns bleached and toned hair a fiery orange.  For locs like Stephanie’s, we recommend making sure the hair is as dry as possible (as opposed to towel-dried hair for other textures). Super Cool Colours can also be applied to dry locs as long as there aren’t any oily products in the hair.

  1. Starting at the bottom, paint Tangerine Dream Super Cool Colour on to the roots. Flip each loc so that you saturate the roots under the lock.

  2. Next, paint down the top of the loc and the underneath, massaging in plenty of the product.

  3. Leave to develop for 30 min.

  4. Rinse really well, until the water runs clear! The dye may get trapped in the loc, so rinse for longer than you think as you don't want to leave product in the hair or on your scalp.
